Pixar’s contract with Disney had come as a result of its technological prowess, after all. These days, it may sound obvious to say that part of Pixar’s success has been the appeal and emotion of the stories the studio tells-but 20 years ago, that didn’t necessarily have to be the case. Stanton remembers telling Pete Docter at one point that the two main characters had to be engaging enough that people would think Buzz and Woody stuck in an elevator for 70 minutes was the highest quality of entertainment. The future “brain trust” shut themselves in a room to rethink the story. The writing team, which included Joss Whedon and Joel Cohen, paired the character concepts with a more cynical attitude than was typical for animated films, and Pixar also made the decision to skip musical numbers in favor of a more mature feel.ĭisney balked at early versions of the story-Woody was not likeable enough, for example-and Catmull says the company “essentially shut down production” over the problem. So Stanton set about helping write the screenplay for a buddy movie, where the conversations would bring the characters to life as much as the unprecedented curves and planes. Then I’d say ‘oh can we do this with it?’ and come up with ideas we’d never thought of.” Meanwhile, all that R&D is inspiring different ideas. “I’d always say ‘hey can we do this?’ They’d say ‘no, but let’s try,’ and they’d do R&D to get there. “I was so geeky and into this stuff,” Lasseter adds. Eventually human presence was too hard to avoid, and as a result viewers could put a face to Andy (a face that showed the improvements of Pixar’s rendering capabilities by the time he was off to college in Toy Story 3). Toys always hung out in a kid’s room, Lasseter added, which let animators do their illustrations on a perfectly flat floor that was simple to render.Īt first, the team was going to avoid humans altogether choosing to keep them just out of the frames, Lady-and-the-Tramp-style, rather than crudely animating their features. Anything in a more “organic” shape or texture ended up looking plastic-which lent itself nicely to a movie about plastic objects springing to life. That software lent itself to perfectly geometric objects, such as blocks, bouncing balls: the type of things found in Andy’s stash of toys. In some ways, working with computers opened new possibilities, letting animators add details they never would be able to (or would want to avoid, to minimize illustrators’ “pencil mileage”), such as the plaid pattern on Woody’s shirt or the stickers on Buzz’s curved glass helmet.īut it had its limits-and that’s where the toys came in. The goal was to allow the animators, without much engineering background, to control movement and “rig” their own characters. No one had ever tried to make a feature-length film with 3D animation, so the technological capabilities guided much of their creative process, says Lasseter, who worked as an animator at Disney after college.Ĭatmull and computer scientists at Pixar built the software that animators could use to design the film, like RenderMan, which originated from Catmull’s studies at the University of Utah, and Menv (“modeling environment”), which the programmers developed for Pixar’s 1988 short Tin Toy. When it came to Toy Story, the animators didn’t have much choice but to follow Disney’s lead. He notes that part of what made the films so magical was how Walt Disney incorporated all the latest technology of his time, letting that innovation stimulate the illustrations. “We grew up with hand-drawn, done the best at Disney Studios,” Catmull says. All along, he had dreams of illustrating movies himself one day. When he was a boy in Utah, he had watched early Disney movies with fascination, his eyes drinking in the color and magic of movement on the screens. The ToysĬatmull’s preparation started early. By the time the Toy Story credits started rolling that first day, the movies would never be the same. The storytelling and technology of Pixar still rests upon the foundation Toy Story built. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Pins for cork boards, tape for poster board, etc). ![]() ![]() "How many creatures walk on earth today, but in the beginning they were different. A Roman historian named Publius Ovidius Naso, better known as Ovid, is the first Roman to write about Phoenix in Latin. ![]() Subsequent authors have often used the feminine form for Phoenix, but since this bird is a unique myth and its offspring did not derive from mating, the discussion of its sex did not seem to be very important. "Where is it and what kind of coffin does this bird put its father in and where does it bury it?" According to the English text, this historian calls Phoenix's father a father, but calls Phoenix the neutral form (it). Although it seems necessary to know about Phoenix, among the Egyptians - perhaps only a handful of priests - no one knows when 500 years will pass, but at least we need to know where Egypt is and Heliopolis where Phoenix is. ![]() Another Greek, Claudius Aelianus, also known as Aelian, wrote about Phoenix 200 AD: "Phoenix keeps the arithmetic of 500 years correct without the help of arithmetic or finger counting, because he learns everything from nature, which is the whole intellect. During the eight centuries BC, the Phoenix bird is mentioned in nine references, eight of which have come down to us through quotations from later authors, and only one case by Herodotus, a Greek historian from 484 to 424 BC, is preserved in full. Phoenix originally entered European culture from ancient Iran. Phoenix in European culture is often an allegory of immortality and eternal life. He emerges with a youthful freshness and begins and passes another round of life. In English culture, the Phoenix is a mythical bird, very beautiful and unique in its kind, which, according to legend, lives in the western desert for 500 or 600 years, burns itself on a pile of debris, and from the resulting ashes, he himself once again. Just pick the right seats for your show!! For me I went specifically for a concert so I can't advise on a tourist visit.Phoenix In European culture It is an incredibly beautiful facility, pristine and clearly efficiently run to manage crowds and visitors. The performers in the show did move throughout the theater so that was inclusive but the lighting design and video were for the audience infront of the stage so when I saw the press photos afterwards ( there was a strict no photo policy during the show, requested by Bjork and enforced by staff) it was an entirely different experience. My son is 11 and there did not appear to be an issue with his age.Once seated I knew that my seats which were to far left of stage were completely wrong to watch this type of show so unfortunately this spoiled the experience a little for me. You are clearly and firmly directed through the beautiful venue in an incredibly efficient manner, front door to seat is pretty seamless and the staff are strong and clear. There is no messing around when you enter the building passing a seating and bar area to one side. We had seats in the second row which I thought would be ideal for an intimate theatre style performance. Taking my son and flying from Ireland for the event. I recently went to see Bjorks performance at the Mccourt Theater. I know mistakes happen but come on, don’t ruin our Saturday night plans AND make me feel like a criminal AND then offer a half as-ed fix. Suddenly a wave of kindness and apology arrived. She then realized that they had not in fact ever emailed new tickets (a glitch in their system). The manager agreed to provide tickets for another date. The show had started a half an hour before! A pair of late seats is not enough. Again though, minimal apology just more implication that it was our fault (we missed the updated email memo). On the way out, on a whim, we stopped at the main office, talked to another manager who in two minutes, competently, found our reservation and issued new tickets. We departed to a “that’s how we do things” “too bad,” despite there being hundreds of empty seats available at the start of the show. Her rudeness, lack of empathy and inability to come up with a solution were shocking. If we wanted to see the show she offered to sell us another few hundred dollars of tickets or we could go home. Our seats were in a section that they closed due to low attendance and they had supposedly emailed new seats (they didn’t). The theater manager implied that my tickets were counterfeit. ![]() We came to the theater with a pair of digital tickets (and emails from the Shed) and left unable to see the show. As a start, the Theater Manager should be retrained (or fired). This beautiful New York non-for-profit needs good customer service, not just talented performers to thrive. The Shed is half empty on a saturday night, a week into its main summer production (Dragon Spring) at least in part because key staff is rude and incompetent. ![]() |
